SURGE SUPRESIÓN

Surge protection is becoming more and more of a necessity rather than just a choice.  With the increase and affordability if all the new Hi-tech toys, smart switching, digital appliances, and home computers; the addition of a TVSS system is highly recommended.  TVSS stands for “Transient Voltage Surge Suppression”.  ‘Transient’ meaning; comes and goes anytime and varies in voltage intensity.  Most events are from Lightning strikes and when the Major electrical loads are switched on or off, this can be when you live close to a major industrial or commercial area or the primary electric service is still an overhead transmission system.  But surges can happen with any electrical supply system. We can scan and assess your electrical service and recommend the proper TVSS for your home.

PANEL UPGRADE

Electrical Service Upgrades are related to your Panel upgrade, but only necessary when you have added onto your home or changed from Gas appliances to all electric equipment.  Your typical size service to a Gas appliance home is 100 amps.  Which is the NEC minimum.  Larger or ‘All electric’ homes are typically 200 amps.  There is a wide range of reasons to have your Electrical Service upgraded.  In the past your home may have been in an unincorporated area (county) and didn’t get inspected by Licensed Inspector, possibly resulting in sub-standard or outdated electric equipment.   When your power service provider changes their overhead transmission lines to ‘underground’, they will require you to upgrade and bring it up to the present code that is in effect.  Your service should be sized at least 40% of the total demand of your breakers, 60% is suggested and 80% is optimal.  Having your electrical service assessed is a good thing to do if only for ‘Peace of Mind’.  If an upgrade is necessary for safety reasons; your Homeowners Insurance may compensate for some or all of the expense…?  Our Technicians and Estimators can assess your service equipment and explain what you have and/or what you need to repair.

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN HIRING AN ELECTRICIAN

1. What Is Your License Number?

UNDER FLORIDA LAW anyone providing electrical work and services must have a license.

These include installation, maintenance, and repair of residential electrical wiring systems.

Note that even apprentices need a license before they can provide electrician services.

So when hiring a professional electrician, the question should not be, “do you have a license?” Instead, be straightforward and ask for their license number.

Once you have that info, go to the Department of Business & Professional Regulation Construction Industry Licensing (DBPR) website. Then, use the DBPR license lookup tool to check if the license number is valid.

2. May I Have Your Insurance Information?

UNDER FLORIDA LAW. The State of Florida requires all licensed Electrical Contractors to carry a minimum of $300,000 in Bodily Injury and $50,000 in Property Damage or a Combined Single Limit of $300,000.

So before hiring a residential electrician, ask for their insurance details first. They should provide their insurance provider’s name, policy number, and coverage dates. You can then call their insurance company to confirm the policy’s validity.

3. What’s Causing My Electrical Problems?

When you call an electrician, tell them immediately about your electrical issues. Then, ask them what they think is behind these problems.

A reputable and experienced electrician will likely name several possible culprits. They may even give you appropriate troubleshooting tips you can try. However, they will also tell you that the best way to identify the cause is for them to inspect your system.

So, a reliable electrician won’t insist on a single cause without testing your system.

For example, suppose you tell an electrician on the phone that your lights flicker or dim from time to time. An experienced electrician won’t tell you it’s 100% due to circuit problems. After all, they know this problem can also result from loose connections or wirings.

4. Do I need a permit?
Some electrical work requires a permit before the work can start. You need to find out if your electrical work needs a permit and who will be responsible for obtaining it. If your electrician offers to obtain the permit for you, then you can rest easy knowing it will be taken care of.

5. Do You Service My Area?

The answer to this is a deal-breaker, as it also influences how soon an electrician can go to your home. For example, if you live in City of Port Saint Lucie, Martin county or St Lucie County, hire an electrician who provides services here. Otherwise, you may have to wait hours, even days, for your service appointment.

Ask These Questions Before Hiring an Electrician

And there you have it, your guide on the most crucial questions to ask when hiring an electrician. Please don’t skip any of them, as they can help you gauge if an electrician is capable and trustworthy.

If you need to hire an electrician in City of Port Saint Lucie , St Lucie County or Martin county , RM Electric is here to help.
